New Orleans’ own award-winning roots rock powerhouse HONEY ISLAND SWAMP BAND is taking over the “Wednesday Residency” for the entire month of January at the legendary Maple Leaf Bar on Oak Street, in the Riverbend District of uptown New Orleans.

Each Wednesday during the month of January 2013, HISB will be performing a full two-set show, with each week taking on a specific theme, unique instrumentation, and a list of songs designed especially for that particular Wednesday. Look for some extra acoustic sets to be worked into some of the shows.

In addition to the band creating a special setlist for each show, HISB will also be presenting a special guest each week, starting with Wednesday January 9 and running through the final residency performance on Wednesday January 30. Each week’s guest will not only be sitting in for some of HISB’s songs, but also will lead HISB on some of that guest’s own original material, as well as collaborating with HISB on some surprises for those fortunate enough to attend that week’s performance!

The special guests confirmed to appear with HISB are as follows:

Wed Jan 9: PAPA MALI – superb guitarist/vocalist and master of the mystical swamp sounds of the South, with his own recognizable style that has been described as “stunningly ethereal and gritty“….Papa Mali has most recently been involved with his own new band DOUBLE UPTOWN SHOTGUN, as well as the amazing project 7 WALKERS with Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann and New Orleans legendary bassist George Porter Jr., and is heralded for both his musicianship and his songwriting.

Wed Jan 16: ALVIN YOUNGBLOOD HART – The cosmic American love child of Howlin Wolf and Link Wray! Known as a “musician’s musician,” Alvin Youngblood Hart’s praises have been sung by everyone from Bob Dylan to Brit guitar gods Eric Clapton & Mick Taylor. Alvin recently collaborated with HISB for two nights of special acoustic & electric shows at Chickie Wah Wah in December, receiving rave reviews from all who attended….and we expect more of the same amazing music on this Wednesday night at the Leaf!

Wed Jan 23: KHRIS ROYAL – outstanding saxophone player and one of the hottest young lions on the rise from New Orleans onto the national music scene….a New Orleans native and graduate of the prestigious NOCCA music program, Khris plays a variety of saxophones including his custom-designed modern horn that sounds like no woodwind you have ever heard before, and has recently been touring internationally as part of the band REBELUTION.

Wed Jan 30: COLIN LAKE – one of New Orleans’ finest up’n‘coming guitarists, with a strong individual style marked by innovative lap-slide guitar playing….after arriving in New Orleans in 2009 from his native Portland, Oregon, Colin fell in love with our music-laden city and made it his home, quickly establishing himself as one of the city’s brightest new axe slingers, with his music steeped in the blues but incorporating elements of soul, funk, and R&B.
