braiker:

Oh, nothing much. Just, you know, Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock in the studio, geeking out over some emerging technology circa 1984. In other words, only the greatest YouTube clip of all time.

Quincy, on synthesizers: “You’re taking a pure, electric signal and sculpting it into something of beauty.”

Herbie: “These instruments were designed for people to use — for PEOPLE to use. It’s just a tool, another tool. The way an axe can be a tool to cut wood, to build a house — or can be a tool to slaughter your neighbor. The same thing: a synthesizer can be a tool to really hurt people’s ears, or interfere with their lives, or can be a tool make a really nice-sounding instrument that can really affect people in a positive way. And it all depends on the person that’s using ‘em. People blame machines very often for: ‘Ah, it’s the machine’s fault.’ How can it be the machine’s fault?! We have to plug it in! The machine doesn’t do anything till we plug it in. It doesn’t plug itself in. It doesn’t program itself. Yet.”
