May 17th, 2011
(Below is a message from Francisco Sanchez, Under Secretary for International Trade at the International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce. The World Trade Center wishes to salute Le Centre International de Lafayette for its excellent work in promoting exporting in Louisiana.)
Today, we kicked off World Trade Week by hosting the President’s “E” Awards here at the U.S. Department of Commerce. Secretary Locke joined the International Trade Administration as we recognized twenty-seven firms from 16 states with proven export success. The recipients received the 2011 Presidential “E” and “E Star” Awards.
The Presidential “E” Award was created by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 to recognize persons, firms, or organizations that contribute greatly to increasing United States exports. The Presidential “E Star” Award recognizes continued superior performance in increasing or promoting exports.
As you know, throughout World Trade Month, the Department of Commerce and ITA are spotlighting U.S. exports and our efforts to grow the economy, put Americans to work, and boost global competitiveness through a series of trade events and programs.
In addition to a successful “E” Awards ceremony, the White House released a Presidential Proclamation for World Trade Week.
