Stained Glass Tour, Preservation Resource Center

Art & Creative, Architecture & Preservation, Religion & Spirituality

September 19th, 2011

Although by a different studio (Reinarts), this window has a format similar to Calming the Seas, with a central cartouche surrounded by pale glass that adds soft light to the building.

The
Stained Glass Art in Sacred Places tour is on Sunday, October 23rd, from
2:00-5:00 pm.  Since All Saints’ Day
follows this tour by only a week, admiring stained glass intended to console
the grieving and to honor the deceased is appropriate. Mausoleums throughout
the city include stained glass, to bring light and hope into somber
environments while reducing the intrusion of the outside world. The tour will
visit Lake Lawn Cemetery, Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum and a second community
mausoleum, All Saints Mausoleum as well as St. Anthony of Padua Church. The
original congregation of this name worshiped in the oldest surviving church in
the city, the Mortuary Chapel on Rampart Street.  In 1915, they relocated to upper Canal Street
to a magnificent building.  Reminiscent
of southern Italy, it welcomes worshipers with elaborate exterior and interior
carvings.

The
tour will include presentations by members of the Stained Glass Art in Sacred
Places tours, followed by a reception at the Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home.
We will meet at the funeral home parking lot, and the bus will leave promptly
at 2:00 for St. Anthony of Padua Church.

 EVENT COST
$15 for PRC
members

$18 for non-members
