Louisiana Iris Day: Caroline Dormon's Legacy in Bloom

The crinkled leaves of the Louisiana Iris are a telltale sign of a
flower spike readying to bloom, and the irises of the Wild Garden are
crinkling aplenty. With recent overnight temperatures hovering in the
mid to high sixties, the iris’ bloom-time will be early this year. Third Annual Louisiana Iris Day has been scheduled for Thursday, March 22,
2012, to take advantage of the renewed evening light of the spring
equinox. The festivities will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Please join us in the Wild Garden to celebrate Longue Vue’s collection of Louisiana Irises and our grande dame Caroline Dormon. Known as a self-proclaimed “irisiac,” Caroline Dormon
(1888-1971) served as a consultant in the Wild Garden and shared many
plants from her personal collection. A pioneering conservationist,
naturalist, writer, and botanical illustrator, Caroline Dormon was a
Louisiana treasure to whom we should all pay tribute.
