2012 New Orleans Saints Position-by-Position Roster Breakdown: Quarterbacks

Sports

May 15th, 2012

Today is the first part in my 11-part series on the current landscape that is the Saints‘ roster. This might be the easiest position to breakdown because, let’s face it, Drew Brees isn’t going anywhere or losing his job anytime soon.

But what’s behind him?

Yes, Chase Daniel is there, but what else? Daniel needs competition. He is not in a position in his career where he should just be comfortable and settled into the backup role. Let’s take a look at the position as a whole, and see how it stacks up.

Starter: Drew Brees

There’s no competition here. Brees is at the height of his game, and has unparalleled accuracy. He has been franchised this offseason while waiting for a long-term contract to come. Brees refuses to sign the tender and deservedly so. His last contract was only $10 million more than what Sam Bradford got guaranteed in his rookie contract.

Stop buying up NBA franchises, Mr. Benson, and pay the person who saved your first team. You know, the team that means the most in this city. (Sorry, Hornets fans.)

Backup: Chase Daniel

When your backup has eight career passing attempts, you might want to look for a little more stable option or, at the very least, some competition for the spot. I understand Daniel is Sean Payton’s pet project, but he hasn’t been overly impressive against second tier competition in preseason play. What makes you think that he will improve vs. 1st-team defenses?

The Rest: Sean Canfield

Canfield is the epitome of a revolving-door quarterback, and I don’t mean he gets sacked often. It means that Canfield goes back-and-forth between being signed and released so many times that he and Tiquan Underwood could be the poster children of the unwanted. Canfield is nothing more than a practice body that the Saints sign when needed.

Brian Brohm, former 2nd round pick, and Patrick Witt, undrafted rookie free agent, were brought in to tryout this past weekend for the Rookie Mini-Camp, but neither of them were signed. That doesn’t mean they couldn’t be brought back, but, since they are not technically a part of the team, I left them off of this discussion.
