Rainwater Revolution Starts in Gentilly
On Saturday, June 30,
Longue Vue House and Gardens will be giving away free rain barrels to select
residents of Pontchartrain
Park and Gentilly
Woods. The giveaway is part of the
Gentilly Rainwater Harvesting Program, a three-stage project that has included
neighborhood-based rain barrel building workshops and demonstrations held at
local events. The Saturday giveaway will
be conducted by Hilairie Schackai, Director of Community Initiatives at Longue
Vue House and Gardens, as fulfillment of a fellowship grant awarded by the
National Audubon Society’s TogetherGreen program, funded by Toyota.
The purpose of the rain barrels is to demonstrate the value of rainwater
harvesting and its use in mitigating flooding from stormwater runoff. As
Schackai explains, “Rain barrels are a natural fit for New Orleans.
In a city prone to flooding it is important to capture as much rainwater
as possible before it rushes into the municipal drainage system. Rain barrels
are an easy way to do this, and they provide a great source of water for the
garden.”
Residents selected to
receive free rain barrels have preregistered with Longue Vue. The giveaway will take place from 8:30 to
10:30 a.m.
