A 29-year-old woman says she fought and yelled her way out of the grasp of a French Quarter kidnapper who crept up behind her last Tuesday night and tried to pick her up and pull off an abduction in the 800 block of Rampart.
The anonymous victim says she ran for safety to Bar Tonique, where employees and managers called 911 and worked to identify the would-be abductor.
New Orleans Police say the 8:30pm incident is being investigated as an attempted kidnapping, and that the wanted unnamed suspect retreated into a white four-door Acura with a Louisiana license plate of “WOT 842”, a tag NOPD spokesman Frank Robertson says is registered to a sex offender.
Bar Tonique’s owner Ed Diaz said he and an employee walked out of the business to identify and potentially confront the suspect, who was spotted getting into the white car said to be driven by another man.
The victim and Diaz said police were slow to respond to repeated 911 calls, and that there was an initial mix up as to which NOPD district was to respond.
Diaz showed his cellphone call log from the August 7 night to WGNO News Monday night, pointing out that four phone 911 calls were made within a 34 minute span, and that officers did not arrive on scene until an hour after the first call was made at 8:39pm.
