Salon.com asks "Best Campaign Commercial Ever?"

Politics

November 23rd, 2009  4 Comments

From Salon.com WarRoom:

James Perry wants to be the next mayor of New Orleans, but right
now, he’s an underdog. And because of the city’s unique election
schedule — the primary’s being held next February — he doesn’t have
much time to introduce himself to voters.

The turn off for me isn't the bleeped out cursing (and anyone who knows me knows I am not the least bit sensitive to cursing!). What drives me away from this candidacy is the experience he proclaims: an eagle scout and executive director of 2 non profits. I just don't see how that prepares him to be mayor of this struggling city.

You and I are on the same page there. However, I'm staying firmly entrenched in the undecided column for the time being. Today at 11 Perry will unveil his crime master plan. He has already demonstrated an ability to keep up with the issues in a way that has escaped the other candidates. I am keeping an eye on his campaign (as well as the others) and while the others are busy making connections, he seems to be making (and writing down) plans for how the work will get done. His grasp of the issues is broad and deep, in a way that the others seem to have a tough time just skimming the surface.

So far, it seems to me if you want a mayor who does not need to refer to a trusted lieutenant to tell him how to handle a problem, Perry is the man.

But the question remains: Is it the best campaign commercial ever. And the answer is unequivocally NO. it's good and it certainly almost definitely gets him a seat at the Xavier televised debate. But for my money the best campagin ad of all time is the Deno Seder ad where there are like 15 S&WB; employees sitting around doing jack while 1 guy does all the work. I think that was one of the first ever "funny" campaign ad's and it has sense transformed the landscape of what a political ad could be. So mad props to the mad genius Deno Seder for that one.

The best campaign commercial is the one that is the cheapest with the biggest reward in improvement in public perception. So for this one I say NO. But it is the best locally so far.
