The Society for Decoration and Sacrifice

Arts & Entertainment

December 11th, 2009

Performance Artist Caron Geary in "FERAL" Exhibition runs Dec. 12 – Jan 3rd

Barrister’s Gallery presents an ambitious group show assembled by international installation artist Delaney Martin with works from New York, London and locally based artists with a series of musical performances by New Orleans talents Noise, C-Section 8, The MicroShards, Walt of Big Ship and Sissy Bounce queen Big Freedia and DJ Rusty Lazer.

The Society for Decoration and Sacrifice invites visitors into a parallel world where day swiftly becomes night, furniture moves, and nothing is quite what it seems. In this interactive environment viewers will encounter artifacts from a fake civilization, inventive mechanical wonders, a Victorian parlor room transported from a far away galaxy, invasive species topiaries, multiple fountains and glorified doorknockers.

The works of the 17 different artists are seamlessly incorporated into a labyrinth of experiences for visitors to play, explore, climb, and crawl through. Installations from artists like Jennifer Odem, who recently had a solo show at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Kim and Scott Pterodactyls, whose epic tree house on Esplanade is fast becoming a New Orleans destination, Drew Zeigler, of the hallucinatory local puppet troupe Scary Toesies, and New York artist Ben Wolf, whose inventive landscapes have been turning up on international art circuit, will be on view with art works from the locals like inventor and mechanist Taylor Lee Shepherd, metal workers Rachel David, Melissa Stryker, and Eric Smith, the painter Myrtle Von Damitz III, and the renowned and recently deceased New Orleans sculptor Jeffery Cook. The show also features several high profile artists from out of town like the headline making jeweler and sculptor Arielle De Pinto (New York) and the brash performance artist Caron Geary (London) making this an exciting multimedia exhibition a must-see event.

A series of experimental musical events will also be staged within the installation including the premiere of a drone opera presented by the band Noise, the soundscape of C-Section 8, the mind slicing trio Microshards, the new one man band of Walt for Big Ship fame, and New Orleans Sissy Bounce star Big Freedia along with everyone’s favorite DJ Rusty Lazer.
