“Uncle” Lionel Batiste is a 79 (or is it 80?) year old music legend and a regular character around the Quarter / Treme. His drums were stolen Saturday evening after KdV while he was in a port-o-pot by the gentleman who was going to “watch the drums” while he relieved himself. Keep your eyes peeled. Talk about it, blog it, tweet it, facebook it, gmail it, sing it and let us scoop out the perps or drive them to return the drums by looking in every neighborhood on every corner. They obviously have no respect and equally no clue whose drums they stole. This drum is part of New Orleans cultural heritage. Please start the dialogue with colleagues, family and friends.

Find Uncle Lionel’s bass drum!
An entry from the Offbeat magazine Facebook page, in an odd kind of way, demonstrates why there always must be a New Orleans.
Uncle Lionel [Batiste’s] Black Bass Drum was stolen after Krewe de Vieux Saturday Night. Just talked to Uncle Lionel, we are looking for his BLACK Bass drum, not the yellow, it was stolen after Krewe Du Vieux outside the port o johns after parade by Elysian Fields and Decatur, some dude said he would watch while Uncle Lionel was in the port….came out they were both gone… He just told “I would rather lose all my women than this bass drum”….and he really appreciates all the concern. This should be enough info to know what hood the drums in, I know there are peeps out there who deal with “The Element” or know someone who does…REACH OUT NOW!!!! Any info call Jeff at 504-943-0743 or Jerry at 504-201-2202

From WWOZ: “THEFT ALERT: “Uncle” Lionel Batiste’s BLACK Bass drum (not
the yellow one) was stolen after Krewe Du Vieux outside the portajohns
near Elysian Fields and Decatur. Someone said he would watch it while
Lionel was in the can. He came out and both were gone. Lionel says: “I
would rather lose all my women than this bass drum, and I appreciate
all the concern.” Please keep a lookout for it!”
